How to open a Roth IRA with Vanguard

A Roth IRA is a tax-advantaged account available in the United States that allows you to save money for retirement. If you are a single tax filer with an income of $101,000 or less or a family (filing jointly) with an income of $159,000 or less, you can contribute up to $5000 per year per spouse.

Vanguard has a large selection of low cost mutual funds and is a top choice among many investors. You can open a Roth IRA online with Vanguard. Here's how.

Go to www.vanguard.com
Under the "Personal Investors" heading, click the "Go to the site" link.
On the page that comes up, click on the "Accounts Types and Services" tab.
On the right hand side, there is a box that says "Open an account". Click the "Invest Now" button.
Under the "Ready to begin?" heading, click "Invest Now"
If you already have an account, sign in. If you don't, click the link that says "Open a new account".
Click the "Invest for retirement" button under the "Step 1" heading. Then click on "Open a Roth IRA" button in "Step 2". In step 3, select "Vanguard mutual funds." Click "Continue".
Fill out all the personal information and complete the sign up. Save money by opting for paperless statements.
Once your account is open, consider setting up automatic investments. On the main account overview page, on the left hand side, near the bottom, click "Set up automatic investment service". Automatic investments are the most reliable for ordinary people to save for retirement.
